If you’re applying for or renewing an Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) license in Alabama, there’s an important update you need to be aware of. Starting in February 2026, the Alabama ABC Board implemented a new background check process for Alabama Liquor License administered by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

The Alabama ABC Board now mandates that all licensure background checks be conducted through ALEA. This includes both state and federal (FBI) criminal history checks. The goal is to create a consistent, secure, and compliant process that aligns with federal standards and state regulations. Background checks are required for:

• Anyone with 10% or more profit or proprietary interest in the business.
• Officers, directors, partners, and members (as applicable).
• Exclusions apply for publicly traded companies and certain 501(c) charitable organizations.

Important note: Even existing licensees may need a new check when submitting applications or renewals. The ABC Board will not accept background checks submitted directly by applicants — ALEA sends the results straight to the Board.

1. Obtain the Required Forms and Instructions
   Download the full ALEA Background Check Packet and instructions directly from the Alabama ABC Board website (under Licensing & Compliance > How to Apply). This packet includes the Application to Review Alabama Criminal History Record Information (SBI Form 46).
2. Get Fingerprinted
   You must provide a classifiable set of fingerprints on an official FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card (FD-258, often called the blue card).

3. Complete and Submit Your Application

   Allow 4–5 weeks or more for ALEA to complete and forward results to the ABC Board. The license will not be issued until all required background checks are clear.
